Hey Oliver, welcome to Reddit!

Before you started doing movies you did a few television shows, would you ever consider working on television again? Also as a bonus question: what are some of your favorite shows?

[–]olivercobbviously[S] 4017 points4018 points  (54 children)

I really loved all the shows I worked on and television in general but I think I'm a little too spoiled with film right now to make my way back. Having the freedom to play different characters, be on new sets, and work with new people on a consistent basis is pretty fucking awesome. So I'd definitely be interested in doing guest bits or even a mini-series or something because there are a lot of great stories being told on television but I don't think I'd commit to a series again just yet

[–]olivercobbviously[S] 2262 points2263 points  (16 children)

Just realized I forgot to answer my bonus question but lately I've been enjoying The Walking Dead, Orphan Black, Shameless, The 100 for my boy Hucke, You're the Worst, The League, It's Always Sunny freaking killed it this season too--A bunch of other stuff here but no spoilers because I'll be honest I'm behind on most of them

[–]SkullKM 1695 points1696 points  (4 children)

Always makes me happy when movie stars I love have decent taste in television.

[–]thegrounders 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Of all the shows I was expecting to see listed, the 100 was not one of them. A+ taste Oliver, Ge smak daun, gyon op nodotaim!

[–]Lufernaal 170 points171 points  (26 children)

But who do you think will triumph in GOT that's the important question here.

[–]This_Is_My_Opinion_ 104 points105 points  (13 children)

Peter Quill.

[–]WazzupMyGlipGlops 370 points371 points  (12 children)

House Quill: Our dick message is coming.

[–]15chainz 3034 points3035 points  (118 children)

Mr. Cobb, welcome to Reddit! Super excited that you’re here with us today.

Two questions for you:

What would be in your perfect sandwich?

Are there any fictional characters from literature that you would like to portray?

That's all! Thanks again for doing this AMA! :)

[–]olivercobbviously[S] 4787 points4788 points  (116 children)

Oh god please don't call me Mr. Cobb that makes me feel like I should be assigning you homework and sending you to the principal's office. Or, you know, growing in a fucking field or something. Besides, we're closer than that so you can call me Grand Master Cobb of the Universe or just address me with a more formal "hey asshole."

As far as sandwiches go grilled cheese sandwiches with avocado are so simple but my total lunchtime staple. Fictional characters is a little harder, I'm not the best reader. Voicing Calvin in a Calvin and Hobbes animated adaptation would be awesome. That's about as deep as my literature goes--oh, playing Salazar Slytherin would be pretty badass too if a Hogwarts founders movie were to ever to happen and I had happened to be reincarnated as someone English. Maybe Dean Moriarty? I don't know, man

[–]TheDeltaLambda 2308 points2309 points  (22 children)

Anyone else picturing an ear of corn with a mustache and monocle?

[–]Hammer_Smashed_Cake 949 points950 points  (55 children)

A founders movie would have so much power of awesome that I'd be willing to overlook your lack of accent if you made it happen.

[–]N7Panda 753 points754 points  (29 children)

I feel like he'd be a better Godric than Salazar but that might be the Peter Quill influence.

[–]jessisgreat4000 111 points112 points  (11 children)

Make it an HBO series and I'm in.

[–]Morroe 338 points339 points  (1 child)

I didn't realize how much I wanted an animated Calvin and Hobbes movie until this moment.

[–]oscarveli 2630 points2631 points  (151 children)

I know that it is just a role, but are there any similarities between you and Peter Quill? What about Jess Mariano?

[–]olivercobbviously[S] 4445 points4446 points  (150 children)

I'm definitely more similar to Peter than Jess. Jess was always too smart, too serious, and too angry for me to relate to and I think the way Peter works around his issues is a lot closer to what I do--which is basically ignore them and sing into dead rats. Also we're both brilliant dancers with excellent taste in music so there's that.

[–]LutzExpertTera 2744 points2745 points  (107 children)

We all loved that soundtrack, man.

[–]Fearlessleader85 772 points773 points  (57 children)

Seriously, the movie was great, but what made it an instant classic was the music.

It's the only movie in the past decade that I saw 3 times in theaters.

[–]olivercobbviously[S] 3685 points3686 points  (106 children)

Just a quick question to turn the tables on you all for a second: why don't planes give out peanuts anymore? Is that an allergy thing? Have I just been unlucky with my flights snackwise? I really loved those fucking peanuts.

[–]illdoitlaterokay 700 points701 points  (7 children)

Pretty sure most flights stopped due to allergy concerns but you could always just buy a jar of peanuts at the store and not worry about getting a plane ticket.

[–]Nurche 1926 points1927 points  (39 children)

[–]eelassirak 700 points701 points  (17 children)

I knew what this was going to be before I even clicked it.

[–]BrunoGrand 1278 points1279 points  (257 children)

Hi Oliver, huge fan! How weird is it to go from smaller roles to the leading dude in things like Guardians of the Galaxy and Jurassic Park? Do you feel super lucky or is it more like you are finally being recognized for your awesome talent?

[–]olivercobbviously[S] 3270 points3271 points  (256 children)

SUPER weird. I mean it's not weird while you're making it (okay so it's actually totally weird walking onto the Jurassic World set and seeing dinosaurs and realizing that maybe that how to be a hypnotist cassette you listened to growing up actually DID end up working because even thought you couldn't get your sister to lend you her car there's no other logical explanation for people on set acting like you're supposed to be there). No doubts about it I'm just lucky as hell. Saying I'm finally being recognized for my talent sounds like such a dick thing to say and I don't think I'd find argument in me knowing I'm not the best. I'm just some idiot that got lucky and promises to put my all into what I do to try and make up for it

[–]Teleia21 352 points353 points  (7 children)

And the real Awesome Mixtape Vol 1 emerges.

[–]imperialxcereal 287 points288 points  (13 children)

But does your sister still refuse to lend you her car?

[–]AidenTheHuman 143 points144 points  (15 children)

Suddenly wanting to see Jurassic World a lot more while reading this AMA...I'm suspicious Oliver.

[–]_banana_llama 1049 points1050 points  (82 children)

If you weren't Star Lord, which superhero would you want to play?

[–]olivercobbviously[S] 2531 points2532 points  (80 children)

Deadpool. I don't think I could ever pull of a total hero but I never liked those anyway. I like the people that sort of straddle the line and for who doing the right thing isn't always their first instinct. Also sidenote but I'm super stoked for the Deadpool movie and Ryan looks like he's going to kill it

[–]AzBrah 1798 points1799 points  (48 children)

How scary was it to work with real dinosaurs?

[–]olivercobbviously[S] 3735 points3736 points  (47 children)

You never realize how scary taking a shit can be until you're doing it in the presence of real dinosaurs. I just knew if I were going to die, that's how it would happen.

[–]Lufernaal 618 points619 points  (33 children)

Never thought I'd be disappointed you didn't die and yet...

[–]Dpty_Cracker 365 points366 points  (19 children)

Well he always has been the shit.

[–]YaketyMax 3251 points3252 points  (86 children)

Thank you for doing this AMA! I'm a big fan of your work, and all the things you do. You did an ace job portraying Peter Quill, which is one of my favorite Marvel Characters. And you had great chemistry with the rest of the guardians. So I guess my question is, do you and Peter share the same personality? And who would you like to team up with in the Marvel Universe?

Also, will you be my unborn daughter's godfather? :D?

[–]olivercobbviously[S] 4295 points4296 points  (72 children)

Grats on your soon to be dadship! I'd love to gatecrash the entire Avengers ensemble just because Peter's not one to go into a group and start following orders so I think he'd definitely shake things up a bit. Plus Peter trying to get Cap drunk despite the seemingly impossibility of the situation would make for a great cinematic experience. Who needs bad guys?

[–]hellohobbit 1651 points1652 points  (27 children)

CONFIRMED: Peter Quill joins cast of Civil War.

[–]kinglouislxix 3505 points3506 points  (23 children)

At this point I'd be more surprised if a Marvel character WASN'T confirmed for Civil War.

[–]Venom349 211 points212 points  (5 children)

"Crazy mother fucka named STAR LORD!"

[–]Danbut15 2224 points2225 points  (80 children)

Hi Oliver! Had a chance to catch The Bronze at Sundance and it was pretty funny. So I got to know, how does one mentally and physically prepare for cartwheeling into a vagina during sex?

[–]olivercobbviously[S] 4613 points4614 points  (73 children)

hahahahah lots and lots of alcohol

[–]escherbach 253 points254 points  (4 children)

The only true way to mentally and physically prepare for anything.

[–]Silfax 2391 points2392 points  (66 children)

Oliver!

I know you've talked before about how you dropped out of high school to pursue a career in LA and I was wondering if you ever wished you had graduated? I'd be graduating next year but what I want to do doesn't require a traditional degree and it feels pointless sometimes sticking around instead of focusing on starting my career.

[–]olivercobbviously[S] 4055 points4056 points  (63 children)

It's hard for me to sit here and wish that I had graduated considering how things turned out but that's more of me being a lucky asshole than proof I made the right choice. I didn't drop out to become an actor and I didn't drop out to follow a dream so I don't want to romanticize that idea, you know? I dropped out because I felt like school was suffocating me. I had never done well, never done well with sitting there and being told to be quiet and I just knew that in the future I'd never have a desk job or continue my education because while I like to learn I just don't do well with schedules or a strict curriculum. I think the education system's kind of fucked anyway so for me to sit there for a few more months and take tests that I knew would never help me or read books that I didn't find interesting or learn math that I would never use seemed like a waste of time. Don't get me wrong, I think that learning is important and that we never should stop learning but I just don't think the way that America teaches kids is the best option. So I left school because someone presented me with a better option and I was tired of feeling like I had to do something that was making me miserable just because it was what was expected of me.

That being said going forward with your decision I think you just have to look at what's best for you. What worked for me doesn't work for everyone. Do I think I made a mistake? No, but if I hadn't become an actor and found something I loved would I still think that? I know I wouldn't think it was a mistake but would you think I had? Would my mom? (actually, I was tempted to answer this with a quick 'yes graduate, because your mom will bring it up every time you see her' but then I started rambling). So, basically, just be confident in your decision knowing that you'll be confident in it regardless of the outcome.

[–]Solemn_Communist 798 points799 points  (9 children)

As a teacher working in education, I agree that America's is indeed a fucked system.

But I also can't help but hope everyone finishes their education regardless.

[–]ChallengersDeep 1214 points1215 points  (34 children)

Does anyone ever use high school math?

[–]anonatitagain 254 points255 points  (29 children)

Future high school math teachers.

[–]akornblatt 941 points942 points  (31 children)

What are you drinking? How you holding up?

[–]olivercobbviously[S] 1578 points1579 points  (30 children)

I hope I'm still holding up in the air but that's something you might want to double check with the pilot.

[–]rubberboy 5239 points5240 points  (447 children)

If you could change a word from the title of any films or television show you've starred in, what would the new title be?

Example, "Hot Tube Time Latrine"

[–]olivercobbviously[S] 5670 points5671 points  (388 children)

Grill More Girls? This could either be a reality show where girls compete to be the best BBQers in the biz or maybe, in a more family friendly take, a bad horror movie where sorority girls are taken one by one from their house and served at their neighboring frats' beerbqs. Or a spin-off prequel of terminus in TWD? I've got ideas here people.

[–]phin_gage 2122 points2123 points  (24 children)

Pretty sure there has to be at least three movies with that plot line on FEARnet already.

[–]solpadoll 152 points153 points  (1 child)

I fucking love everything about this AMA.

[–]Praetus 1544 points1545 points  (48 children)

Hi Oliver, If you could be anything else other than an actor, what would you want to be?

Also, if you could leave a comment saying hi to my Fiancé it would make her day. She loves Star-Lord!

[–]olivercobbviously[S] 3269 points3270 points  (44 children)

Hi Preatus' Fiancé! Leave this goon and come find me in LA.

[–]Praetus 317 points318 points  (17 children)

I should be offended but you made her life and now I get to say she chose me over Star-Lord.

[–]Conford 588 points589 points  (10 children)

Is this invitation open to anyone engaged?

[–]SkullKM 264 points265 points  (3 children)

Hey /u/Praetus want to get engaged so I can hang out with Oliver?

[–]readysetno 1626 points1627 points  (136 children)

Just had to tell you, I got in an actual, out and out fight with a friend ~15 years ago about whether Jess or Dean was the better choice - I defended you to the end.

How did you feel about where Rory and Jess' relationship ended?

Thanks Oliver!

[–]olivercobbviously[S] 2632 points2633 points  (134 children)

I liked where Jess and Rory's relationship ended just because I liked that Jess grew the fuck up without really having to compromise who he was.

[–]Lufernaal 538 points539 points  (46 children)

I like to think they got back together way down the line but that's just me.

[–]AzBrah 1547 points1548 points  (33 children)

That's just everyone, fellow Jess fan.

[–]Conford 864 points865 points  (34 children)

TEAM JESS

[–]LutzExpertTera 1939 points1940 points  (73 children)

Is Ione James really as crazy as she's portrayed?

Also, do you still have her scarf, and does it really smell that nice?

[–]olivercobbviously [S] 890 points891 points  (14 children)

I'd answer your first question with no but unfortunately I'm not allowed to comment on Ione without my lawyer present.

[–]LutzExpertTera 251 points252 points  (8 children)

This is the most yes sounding no I have ever read.

[–]Pkock 110 points111 points  (6 children)

I'd like to know which "indie record which is much cooler than mine" Ione was referring to in "We Are Never Getting Back Together"

[–]redfoot80 1242 points1243 points  (154 children)

Oliver! I know the Happy Endings reunion turned out to be a joke (if one can count my eternal sobbing as a joke) but if it had been a reality would you have been up for a potential return?

[–]olivercobbviously[S] 2645 points2646 points  (141 children)

Man I just have to say I was also a huge fan of Happy Endings so it would have gutted me that I wouldn't have been back just because Pete and Penny's story was clearly at a close. If they had asked me to dye my hair pink and written me in some other way though would've done it in a heartbeat. I was always sad that Pete was more or less always out of the fun shenanigans but with a cast of such phenomenally hilarious people that's probably where I was best left

[–]davec79 2045 points2046 points  (119 children)

Can you dye your hair pink anyway? Just for fun.

[–]The--Yellow--King 1287 points1288 points  (82 children)

If a photoshopped picture of this doesn't already exist on the internet I'm going to be disappointed

[–]tyler289 357 points358 points  (28 children)

Since they made a dinosaur in the new movie, if you made a dinosaur, what would it look like?

[–]GallifreyanRavenclaw 208 points209 points  (24 children)

It better have feathers.

[–]JW_Stillwater 50 points51 points  (8 children)

Was kind of hoping the Jurassic World dinosaurs would have feathers but they look cool enough that I'm not too disappointed.

[–]merry722 709 points710 points  (30 children)

How can I convince my friends that Jurassic World is gonna be great?

[–]olivercobbviously[S] 1372 points1373 points  (25 children)

Show them a picture of me.

And then tell them "this butthead probably gets eaten by dinosaurs."

[–]mpls_hotdish 1259 points1260 points  (13 children)

Tell them that life, uh... finds a way...

[–]Dani_Californication 4210 points4211 points  (175 children)

hey oliver!

not sure if you watch community but they're definitely watching you. they namedropped you quite heavily in a recent episode and i was wondering if you saw it! totally awesome show that you should watch if you don't btw

[–]olivercobbviously[S] 4991 points4992 points  (150 children)

I do watch Community but I am a little behind on this season. I saw this one though! I got a bunch of texts about it so my narcissism had to check it out. Fucking hilarious, a real honor. Laughed hardest at the bazinga dig most though

[–]Dani_Californication 3774 points775 points  (92 children)

So glad you caught it! Oliver Cobb will always be out there, mocking me.

[–]Theemuts 157 points158 points  (3 children)

And we need to stop thinking about Oliver Cobb so much, it's not healthy.

[–]GetFreeCash 681 points682 points  (41 children)

Hey Oliver, welcome to Reddit! Super excited that you're here with us today.

What was it like making Gilmore Girls? Who was your favorite person to work with on that show or was it just everyone?

Thanks again for doing this AMA! :)

[–]olivercobbviously[S] 1604 points1605 points  (40 children)

Everyone on Gilmore Girls was awesome to work with but I spent most of the time with Scott. Was a lot of fun even if he pushed me into a lake.

[–]PSUProud 593 points594 points  (8 children)

Hey Oliver. I live on Long Island not far from where you grew up. What are some of the places you miss most about growing up here?

[–]notgayinathreeway 51 points52 points  (3 children)

If the answer to this isn't a bagel place I'll eat my shoe.

[–]CornyJoke 124 points125 points  (2 children)

Nobody ever misses anything about Long Island

[–]gofuckyazelf 181 points182 points  (1 child)

Ain't that the truth.

[–]aye_ofthetiger 2384 points2385 points  (44 children)

I think if what I remember is correct, and if this AMA post is any indication, then you hate flying. Do you regret taking a job that requires so much travel? And any tips for a mere reddit mortal who shares your fear of flying?

[–]olivercobbviously[S] 4366 points4367 points  (38 children)

Honestly when I first started auditioning for things I didn't even factor in the flying bit, hell I had never even been on a plane until I was nineteen or so. Still as much as I hate flying (and trust me, I really hate flying) I can't ever regret getting on a plane because I do love to travel. It's just the whole getting there bit that sucks balls. I don't have any tips for you, do you have any tips for me? Though I'm a bit of a contradiction when it comes to flying because I love take off and I love landing and even turbulence is sometimes comforting because flights that are too smooth make me suspicious. I just can't, and I KNOW this makes no sense, but I can't get over the idea that at one moment the plane will just stop and we'll plummet. Don't try and physics my brain here, you won't win with your logic. Also I hate sitting still for so long but then I also hate getting up and walking around so it's just a terrible situation all around. The best I can suggest is my own tactic: take dramamine with a strong chaser, put on some music, and then spend the remainder of the flight refusing to give in to the call of sleep because you just know the second your eyes close the plane will plummet and you won't be able to pull out some sort of life saving maneuver if you're not alert

[–]DontEatTheCandle 1373 points1374 points  (10 children)

I used to like take-off until I saw Final Destination.

[–]olivercobbviously[S] 403 points2404 points  (7 children)

Not even lying when I saw I used to refuse to fly first class not because I'm a modest guy but because they didn't survive the crash on LOST.

[–]Chance_iz_squad 287 points288 points  (6 children)

TIL Peter Quill would be too chicken to fly his own plane.

[–]kinglouislxix 240 points241 points  (1 child)

"I'd love to save the galaxy with you guys, how long do you think it would take for us to walk there?"

[–]Scarbane 118 points119 points  (4 children)

A trip from one mere reddit mortal to another: invent teleportation.

[–]randomdumbcomment 29 points30 points  (5 children)

Hey Oliver,

Thanks for being awesome.

If you could describe it in only one word, what was it like filming Jurassic World?

[–]squirtlenamedscooter 107 points108 points  (2 children)

What's your favorite breakfast cereal?

[–]BMW1M 284 points285 points  (8 children)

Oliver:

As a fan if I saw you in public and wanted to approach you and compliment you on your work, what would be the most respectful way to do it? Since this probably won't ever happen let me take this moment to say you did a great job in Guardians and best of luck to you.
